Turning Over a New Leaf:
Introducing Beleaf
Overview
In May 2007, Beleaf was born. Beleaf is Rizco Design’s three-tiered environmental program that encourages the elimination of deforestation. This measurable plan of action aims to extend the sustainability efforts of the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) Chain of Custody, which supports responsible forestry practices. Printers and paper merchants have been educating designers about the FSC’s Chain of Custody and the message is clear: paper and printing decisions have a major impact on the environment. That’s why Beleaf is designed to measure the decision-making throughout the creative process, starting with how our office operates, to how we approach a design, and finally, to how projects are printed.
Design Challenge
• To influence potential and existing clients to join our efforts and create a cycle of change that encourages environmentally responsible graphic design decisions involving paper and printing.
• To help clients understand that there is no additional cost to their bottom line and that “going green” does not impact the quality of their end-product.
• To prove that Beleaf is measurable and that Rizco is committed to reaching at least a 70 percent sustainability level per project.
