Cover Design Contest Entry for the GDUSA ‘Design Your Own Cover’ Digital Printing Contest
In August of 2011, Rizco Design submitted a cover design for the GDUSA ‘Design Your Own Cover’ Digital Printing Contest sponsored by Kodak. The goal was to create a design that worked as a cover for the September Edition of GDUSA and integrate Kodak’s Nexpress Fifth Imaging Unit Solution capabilities, which include adding texture such as gloss & spot gloss, watermarks, clear coating, and red fluorescing.
Where did the inspiration come from?
Designer, Allison Grow states, “There is a misconception that digital printing can not capture the fine details, reproduce 4-color art accurately, or provide the finishing techniques that compare to offset printing. Our solution was to create a cover, which would showcase the strengths of digital printing and the Nexpress Fifth Imaging Unit. In spirit of September, the “forget-me-nots”, birth flower of September, was our selection for the cover’s iconic image. The design we submitted showcased the use of 4-color artwork, halftone tinted pattern/text and line art, which would allow the digital press to showcase its reproduction qualities. We utilized the Nexpress Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions by applying its dimensional coating — adding the “POP” to the title “Forget-Me-Not”, the flower and the outline of the flowerpot, which showcased a tight registration. Our goal was for the dimensional coating to bring an additional sense of touch and connect the viewer to the piece.”
